The Isle of Wight (/waɪt/ WYTE) is an island, English county and unitary authority in the English Channel, 2 to 5 miles (3 to 8 kilometres) off the coast of Hampshire, across the Solent. It is the largest and second-most populous island in England. Referred to as “The Island” by residents,[6] the Isle of Wight has resorts that have been popular holiday destinations since Victorian times. It is known for its mild climate, coastal scenery, and verdant landscape of fields, downland, and chines. The island is historically part of Hampshire.[7] The island is designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. With a land area of 380 km2 (150 sq mi), it is about half the size of Singapore.
The island has been home to the poets Algernon Charles Swinburne and Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Queen Victoria built her summer residence and final home, Osborne House, at East Cowes on the Isle. It has a maritime and industrial tradition of boat-building, sail-making, the manufacture of flying boats, hovercraft, and Britain’s space rockets. The island hosts annual music festivals, including the Isle of Wight Festival, which in 1970 was the largest rock music event ever held.[8] It has well-conserved wildlife and some of Europe’s richest cliffs and quarries of dinosaur fossils.
The island has played an essential part in defending the ports of Southampton and Portsmouth and has been near the front line of conflicts throughout the ages, having faced the Spanish Armada and weathered the Battle of Britain. Although rural for most of its history, its Victorian fashionability and the growing affordability of holidays led to significant urban development during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Few would dispute that Banksy is the most famous urban artist in the world today. That he is also one of the most perceptive art historians of our age might come as a surprise to many.
Kelly Grovier, author of ‘How Banksy Saved Art History’, speaks to us about his interest in Banksy’s work through the lens of art history, and the artist’s impact and legacy. The book offers a new take on the history of art as parodied, reinterpreted and ultimately reinforced by the international phenomenon that is Banksy.

👀 Have you spotted hawthorn berries yet?
🌳 Hawthorn is a native species that grows in hedgerows, woodland and scrub across the UK. It is shade-tolerant and grows in almost any soil.
🍒 The deep red fruits are called ‘haws’ and resemble small apples with a single seed. Look for them amongst deeply lobed leaves.
🐦 Common hawthorn supports a range of wildlife, including more than 300 insects. The dense foliage makes fantastic nesting shelter for many bird species, and seedlings of other tree species survive under it.
🌱 We have hawthorn saplings in our shop, sourced and grown in the UK. Head to the link in our bio to order yours today.

On Tuesday 3rd August, Kay Jones, the Director of Children’s Social Care for the IW Council paid us a visit! She taught us about her role, what social work entailed and gave advice to any young people who wanted to become a social worker.
It was great to speak to her because it is important that children in care are considered, that young people know what options for help they have, and what job opportunities we have. We are so grateful she took the time out of her day to speak to us. Thank you @iowcouncil !! 🙏

Perched high atop her moss draped throne, the matriarch Osprey welcomes the rising sun. Her peppered necklace of light brown feathers appear to be painted on by a master artist. This is a trait you won’t find in male Ospreys. Only the females get the pretty decor.

👷🏠 Roofstore is the only independent roofing merchant on the Isle of Wight, and the team there recently reached out to us to offer support for our bear habitat, providing all of the timber for our bear platforms to help complete Benji and Balu’s new home.
🚛🏗️ By donating materials, Roofstore is helping us save significant funds, which means we can put more towards building a high-quality bear house and visitor experience. 🐭 Bank voles are small chestnut-brown rodents with a cream-coloured underbelly.
🔍 Like all voles, they have small eyes, a short tail and a rounded snout. They also have large ears which distinguish them from other UK vole species.
🌳 Look for them along woodland edges and hedgerows foraging for vegetation, roots, fungi, fruits, nuts and insects.
😴 Bank voles don’t hibernate, so you can spot them all year round.

📆 This week is Asian hornet week, a week dedicated to raising awareness and improve identification of Asian hornets
⚠️ The non-native Asian predatory wasp, Vespa velutina (also known as the Asian hornet), is an invasive species from Asia.
🤔 What’s the problem?
🐝 Preying on insects, including honey bees and other pollinators, it is a significant threat to bee colonies, and other native species in the UK. They are most likely to be seen near bee hives, preying on bees defending the hive.
🤔 How did they get here?
💁 The hornet can be accidentally imported through goods such as timber, soil, fruit, potted plants, cut flowers, though it is most likely to found in the southern parts of England as it cannot survive the colder climates in the north of the UK. Its active months are between April and November, though they’re most active in August/September.
👆 For more help on identifying Asian hornets click the link in our bio.

Congratulations to Linda Prendergast, who has been handed the Queen’s Nurse award for community education!
This prestigious title is applied for by nurses with at least five years’ experience, who can show they have been committed to delivering and leading outstanding care in the community.
In Linda’s case, she has spent around 40 years in nursing, including 25 years at Mountbatten. She is currently based on our education team, which allows her to share her knowledge and skills with others.
Linda says she accepted the title of behalf of Mountbatten and her colleagues. We’re really proud of Linda, who joins a handful of other colleagues among the Queen’s Nurse ranks.

Autumn adventures 🍂
There are plenty of things to do on the #IsleofWight in autumn. Thanks to our micro-climate with higher-than-average temperatures and more sunshine hours, autumn is a great time to visit. Think fewer crowds but still plenty to do…

Old Weird Britain

St Lawrence Well on the Isle of Wight is little known. It lies on an old pilgrims’ path.
I love its quiet, lonely atmosphere enhanced by a Victorian Gothic stone wellhouse.
Pilgrims are rare now. It sleeps in mossy magic.

There’s been little change since our last update on the Isle of Wight White-tailed Eagles – three remain settled on the Isle of Wight, while another is still in Oxfordshire. Watch out for a more detailed blog soon, but here’s a superb photo of two of the birds by Nick Edwards.

Autumn Isle of Wight Walking Festival marks 25 years with exciting new routes
Simon Clark·6, September 2024
There are just four weeks to go before the Autumn Isle of Wight Walking Festival, celebrating 25 years in 2024.
The popular multi-award winning event takes place between 5th to 13th October 2024 on the UK’s largest island, one of only seven UNESCO Biosphere Reserves in the UK.
Organised by Visit Isle of Wight
The Isle of Wight Walking Festival is organised by Visit Isle of Wight, thanks to support and funding by Island business Wight BID levy payers, with the mostly free to join walks led by local volunteers with a passion for the Isle of Wight.

More routes have been added to the Autumn Walking Festival, which now has up to 100 walks available to visitors who wish to explore the Isle of Wight at a slower pace.
New walks cover a range of interests and opportunities for walkers of all ages keen to discover more about the Isle of Wight and its people.
Stroll with Quiggers
The newly elected MP for Isle of Wight West, the first ever Labour Member of Parliament for the Island, will be joining the Autumn Isle of Wight Walking Festival for the first time.
Richard Quigley
Richard Quigley will be leading a three-mile stroll along the coastal path from Cowes to Gurnard and back with his three dogs, with the opportunity to get to know the new MP with a walk and talk.
Appley Tower walk
The newly re-opened Appley Tower, a 19th Century folly perched just above the beach at Ryde, is the focus of another new route for the Autumn Isle of Wight Walking Festival.
Led by Rachael Ardley of the Appley Tower Heritage Project, the gentle 1.5 mile circular walk gives attendees the opportunity to discover the history behind the iconic landmark on Ryde seafront and a visit to an exhibition at Appley Tower.

Wight Nature Fund
Local charity Wight Nature Fund will be leading walkers on a 4 mile walk at Yarmouth. The walk includes an exploration of Mill Copse, a stretch of partly ancient woodland on the banks of the River Yar, and managed by Wight Nature Fund.
There will be the opportunity to see how coppicing, completed in part with local students, is helping to regenerate the Mill Copse and provide a better habitation for local flora and fauna.
Celebrating Goatober
Celebrating Goatober, keen walkers are invited to join the Chair of the Isle of Wight Ramblers David Yates for an 18 mile circular route on the south side of the Island.

Those who complete the journey will be rewarded with tour of Kingston Smallholding Goat Farm, a goat hot dog and drinks.
Relay The Bay
A 3 day walk relay will give a variety of opportunities to explore the east coast of the Isle of Wight. Totaling 26 miles, the Relay The Bay walks are broken down to 6 shorter routes, where a community-created handmade silk flag forms the ‘baton’ which is carried along the way and passed from one stage to the next.

The walk is supported by Isle of Wight National Landscape (formerly IW AONB) as part of its UNESCO Biosphere Reserve ‘Get Out There!’ strategy.
A fantastic celebration of 25 years
With many more walks available, the Autumn Isle of Wight Walking Festival is set to be a fantastic celebration of 25 years, and a great launch point for the next 25!

Brexit Buster
@BrexitBuster
Curious that the Tories never suggest interning asylum seekers on the Isle of Wight, which has a population of 141,500 and is just a few miles off the English coast? Could that be because it is a safe Tory seat with a 23,737 majority? Tories don’t shit on their own doorsteps. 💩
